Polish Consul, Rita Cosby, Veterans organizations urge Monument Relocation
Prior to joining the group at the Tea, Dr. Jan Napoleon Saykiewicz, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland, joined Jan Cygnier, Commander District 9 of the Polish Army Veterans Association PAVA and Ken Milenovic, Ohio Commander of the Polish Legion of American Veterans, to discuss with members of Town One Streestscapes the relocation of the WWl & WWll Polonia veterans monument on South Avenue to one more accessible to the public in Peterson Park in nearby Poland, Ohio. Polish Youngstown has been working to move the structure from its current site to that park for almost a year. The park already houses the only statue in America that together depicts the first and famous Polish soldiers who fought for American freedom, Gens. Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Kazimierz Pułaski. The groups was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with a scale model of the obelisk that allowed everyone to see how it would look placed below the flagpole.
When international newscaster and author, Rita Cosby visited Youngstown to introduce her new book
Quiet Hero: Secrets from My Father's Past she took a trip to the monument. Polish Youngstown has been working to move from its current site That location already is home to the only statue in America that together depicts the first and famous Polish soldiers who fought for American freedom, Gens. Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Kazimierz Pułaski. “Freedom is not free, and honoring the memory and legacy of those who have gone before, reminds us of the continued sacrifices made to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today,” she said.
