The common view of monuments is that they are statues made of marble or stone that commemorate people who have died. However, the true definition of a monument is found in what it accomplishes. A monument memorializes someone; it brings that person to mind, honors them, and inspires us profoundly. A monument is not just a memory, however; it is an enduring memorial that stands throughout the ages to convey to us what the person it honors stood for.

* For months we have been working to move the World War I & II Veterans Memorial from South Avenue in front of the former Krakusy Hall to a different location. With the help of O.T. Beight Monument, Diamond Steel and the Polish Army Veteran's Association of America, this month we made some real progress to reaching that goal. More on this in yesterday's
Youngstown Vindicator.

Polish Happy Hour had another great night on this month as about 40 people partied to L'uva Bella Winery in Lowellville.  Joe Hollabaugh, Wine Master, gave a short talk about how the business started and the different juices and wines available.  Frank Sergi, owner, set the bar with appetizers and featured a special "White Eagle" drink for us to enjoy.  The ambiance and coziness of the Winery made for a great evening of conversation and fun.  But don't think this was a "talk only" event!  As always, when there is music, We Polka!  Live music was provided by Honky Rocky & The Jammers, with Rocco Naples on drums, and as vocalist and with Roger Juntenen playing the concertina.  A fabulous time was had by all, and we look forward to Polish Happy Hour on October 14TH at the Youngstown Club where we will simultaneously celebrate PolishYoungstown’s 2nd Anniversary so you know there will be some special surprises in store! More on that to come!

While we were celebrating, Team member Agi Khoury and her husband Tony gave us something to really be excited about…Little Lilliana Marie Khoury was born 4:29 PM at 7 lb. 11 oz. Although they chose not to attend PHH (LOL!) Mom and baby are doing great and we hear they will even make an appearance at Krakowiaki practice next week. Congratulations to the whole family!!       Ken Shrilla, one of your favorite PHH hosts, is also doing exciting things this month Right after Polish Day he left for Croatia for the month He has been sending us updates via narratives and photos. Check it them out here.

We started back to school with our first Polish language classes last Tuesday at St Peter & Paul Church on Covington Street in Youngstown.  We devoted the whole class to introductions, choosing our new study book and reviewing the Polish alphabet. So there is still time to join us! Remember, we expanded to offer basic, children’s (1-8th grade), beginner and advanced beginner classes. More info and updated registration forms are available here.

Mary Ann Mlynarski and the Polish Arts Club would like to thank thanking people for supporting their scholarship fund by buying bake goods at Polish Day bakery table and purchasing their colorful Got Pierogi t-shirts. If missed out on buying one you still have a chance! They are $15 and are available in a variety of adult and youth sizes. If interested contact Mary Anne at (330) 647-9634 or via email at mamlynarski@yahoo.com.  The group gathered this past weekend at Woodworth Park for its annual Family Picnic. There were food, games and family fun for all ages. The Club handed out its new yearbooks with an event schedule for the upcoming year.  This is a great time to consider joining...

COMING UP:  Sept. 25th is Polish Nite at Kuzman’s in Girard…Sept. 26th is Lawrence County Polish Day at nostalgic Cascade Park will feature Lenny Gomulka and Henny & the Versa J’s. It is sure to be a great time!
