Ostatki: A Polish Carnival Celebration

Saturday, February 6th at 7 p.m.
 The Youngstown Club

Put aside the Cajun beans and Mardi Gras beads this year and mark the season with a unique experience you will be sure to enjoy! This Slavic-inspired Pre-Lenten Celebration includes samples of elite vodkas and Polish beers—imported for the event and not normally available in Ohio--complimented with an assortment of authentic heavy Hor d'oeuvres, live music, dancing, trivia contest and—of course, a paczki parade and prizes.

NEW addition to the activities this year we will be the Vodka Cocktail Contest.  Contestants will be competing for prizes before a panel of celebrity judges based on presentation, creativity, originality and taste. As an added twist, they must name the cocktail after something having to do with Poland and tell us why! Each of the contestants’ drinks will be available for you to try for yourself afterward! Think you can compete? Contact Tom today and get yourself entered!

But this is only one of the activities at this raucous, memorable event.

Upon arriving, you will receive some beads and your personalized Passport for the evening. This will be your guide through Poland and the array of a dozen imported vodkas, beers and wines--most of which are not readily available for purchase in Ohio. You go from station to station learning a little about each and sampling.  Finish your passport and earn some beads.

Simultaneously, you will be trying to fill out your Polish Trivia card. Each person receives a different card when they arrive. Some questions are easy and some are challenging. To make it fun, there are trivia answers on the back...but not yours! So if you introduce yourself to the right person you just might find all the answers for which you are searching! Completed, correct cards are put into a drawing for door prizes!

For music this year, we are bringing in a Polish DJ from Pittsburgh. A former member of the famous national folk dance group, Maszowsze, Radoslaw Fizek is a talented violinist, singer and entertainer. He will be treating us to a violin performance in the first hour and then switch to a variety of music styles and vocals as the night progresses. To get a taste of his work, go here and click on Events.

You can never go wrong with the food at the Youngstown Club. Chef Rob will make the regular menu available for dinner, but I doubt that you will need it. He has a plan for an EXTENSIVE appetizer buffet including all of your Polish favorites done his way...savory mushroom soup, delicate potato pancakes, herring, kielbasa, kapusta, pierogi and more!  Of course there is the paczki parade and prizes, too!  See more pictures of last year’s fun here. Tickets for $30 advance/$40 at the door. Call 330-719-0415 for information. Make your reservations here.

PolishYoungstown would like to welcome to its team Marta Mazur. A recent transplant from Connecticut, but born in Gdynia, Marta will be heading up our education committee.
She already has embarked on her first project: to create an educational resource suitcase at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. Local teachers can then access the material and incorporate it into their class curriculum. India, Ireland and Native Americans currently have trunks consisting of artifacts that represent particular culture and their connection to the Youngstown area. We are asking for your help and involvement in our effort to acquire items to fill our collection. Our heritage and cultural footprint in the region could be expressed through books, maps, DVDs, CDs, costumes, flags, folk art and paintings. Have something you want to share? Contact Marta directly at
