For the past several months area choirs have been working to create a Marian-themed CD in honor of the dedication. You can make your voice heard and be part of the celebration TODAY Thursday October 4 at 5 PM when the general public is invited gathering to perform and record a community version of Czarna Madonna to honor the Blessed Mother.  Conceptualized to be in the spirit of “We Are the World”, this charity single will be included on the Shrine Tribute CD, but the only one to be released as a single. All profits from its sale will go to support the shrine.  Words and sing along available here. REMEMBER: No experience necessary! All are welcome!  However, doors will be locked after 5:15 pm to allow for proper recording so be prompt.  The complete CD will be available for purchase at the dedication on October 30.

Polish and Really Proud this Month
Since 1608, when the first Polish settlers arrived at Jamestown, VA, Polish people have been an important part of America's history and culture. In 2012, Polish Americans will mark the 31st Anniversary of the founding of Polish American Heritage Month, an event, which began in Philadelphia, PA, and became a national celebration of Polish history, culture and pride. Learn more about it
here. At PolishYoungstown, we consider it our mission to educate about Polish heritage and help you share your pride in it. This month we are going all out!  The list of the festivities—many of which are FREE—were put together for you and four family to celebrate and learn. The complete list is available here

FREE Polish Language and Culture Classes
Due to our late start, we have decided to offer Polish Language & Culture lessons for FREE this     semester! We are still gathering on Tuesday nights at 6 PM and offering beginner and intermediate. What’s different is the approach our new teacher Pani Agnieszka wants to try—more fun and culture for those who want just a little language and more technical and computer activity for those who are serious language students. For more info call 724-347-3455.

Efforts Underway to Honor Hero
The Foundation to Illuminate America’s Heroes, formed as a charitable educational vehicle to find and illuminate the lives of true American heroes, is seeking support to  help illuminate the legendary & inspirational story of Merian C. Cooper and the famed Kosciuszko Squadron. Long before coming to Hollywood and producing many motion pictures, most notably the original “King Kong”, Cooper was a WWI fighter pilot. Seeing a need, he voluntarily created and formed the Kosciuszko Squadron of American and Polish pilots who fought for Poland in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921. Cooper and his fellow pilots risked their lives for freedom, just as Pulaski and Kosciuszko had done earlier. Three of the American fighter pilots gave their lives and Cooper’s plane was shot down and he spent months in a Soviet prisoner of war camp.  Its members include prominent American and Polish citizens who share a passion for the Cooper/Kosciuszko story and want to see it shared with the world. Learn more about the effort and see a clip here

Thousands attend 'Wake up Poland' demonstration in Warsaw
Tens of thousands of supporters of opposition parties and the Solidarity trade union gathered in Warsaw, Saturday, to protest against the policies of the Polish government, including the and raising the retirement age. The demonstration included a large group of listeners of the ultra-conservative Radio Maryja station, protesting against the exclusion of its sister television station TV Trwam from Poland's new digital platforms on “political grounds”, they claim.
