In Poland there is no celebrating this week’s holiday since it is all about the Pilgrims and Plymouth Rock. In fact, Americans working in Poland are often surprised when they can’t seem to get the day off let alone the fixings for their traditional meal. However, if you would like to give your celebration a little Polish flair, I found suggestions for you HERE.

Polish Delegation coming to Youngstown
Next week the Chamber of Commerce is hosting a conference on shale gas opportunities, YOUNG2011. Knowing that Poland is also experiencing a shale boom, Eric Planey, Vice-President, International Business Attraction (and another great local Pole) extended an invitation to the Trade & Investment Section at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland and they have decided to send a delegation! The hope is that the group will find some means of collaboration thru meetings with economic, business and political leaders. PolishYoungstown is excited to be the only nonprofit organization invited to participate in the evening’s reception. Will share details next week!

Reserve your spot at Wigilia …
The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown hosts an enchanting annual Christmas Eve dinner every year that you don’t want to miss! There is limited seating this year so reserve your spot now! The event will take place Sunday, December 4 from 12:00-5:00 PM at The Youngstown Club.  This year’s entertainment includes “Andrzejki” fortune telling, a Polish Christmas Market, a basket and 50/50 raffles.  Special Polish folk entertainment this year is an interactive theatre presentation of the traditional “Jasełka,” or nativity play performed in English but including Polish koledy, Christmas carol sing-a-long.  What part will you play?  MORE

Yummy Holiday Treat Available
The Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle is importing unique sękacz cakes for your holiday enjoyment. This incredible, extra rich pound cake from Podlasie region in the eastern is distinctive in both taste and shape. The thick batter contains more than 40 eggs making it luscious and long lasting. It recognizable for its pine tree shape obtained being made by ladling batter systematically onto a rotary spit over or above a very hot wood-burning fire for 10 hours. Learn more about it and how to order one HERE

Zatańczmy should be held here , darn it!
It is too bad that
Zatańczmy: A Celebration of Polish Folk Dance took place in Cleveland this past weekend. Mahoning Valley residents missed a high-quality, colorful and entertaining performance!  I’m biased, but I feel Krakowiaki stole the show with its opening number featuring our tiny krasnoludki like Lilliana Khoury pictured here. Bob Johnson of Polonia Music so enjoyed the event that he created a tribute website with video and photos. Check it out HERE

Polka Legend Come to Area for Last Time
Cleveland Polka Association brings Eddie Blazonczyk’s Versatones Farewell Tour to Cleveland on Saturday. This is BIG deal in the polka world and for all long-time fans like me. When other girls were listening to Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson, I was memorizing the words to Polka Celebration. Seriously have a prized signed poster from festivals at Idora Park! About 10 years ago, his son took the reins and created a new sound.  Brother Tony is still playing with his band New Phaze but this is undoubtedly the end of an era.  Thanks for everything guys—Sto Lat!

The struggle for our churches
The newsletter came out too late last week for many of you to hear
Rita Cosby interview Joseph Feckanin, Cleveland’s Polish church spokesman, on her radio program. You can listen to the interview here

News from Poland
The Other Wałęsa has her say
In a candid autobiography coming out this week,
Danuta Wałęsa  talks publicly for the first time about her loneliness and fear for the family's unity as her husband gained worldwide recognition with his political work.
