I know we talked about this last week but I can’t seem to let the concept go…if only the rain would go away we might be able to enjoy a spring picnic! Remember last week we talked about PolishYoungstown’s first flash mob event being a majówka? Well, we are in good company. In honor of International Dance Day a dance flash mob took place on the square in front of the Galeria Krakowska. More than 150 people participated performing a 4-minute choreography. Learn more about it all here. The final result of the preparations was recorded by 21 hidden cameras, and can be seen as our new video on the PYTown home page.

Speaking of dance, there will be some dancing this weekend at Kuzman’s in Girard when they go Polish style and host Stephanie, America’s Honkytonk Polka Sweetheart. The evening will also be a celebration for radio broadcaster Larry Walk. A Sunday staple for Mahoning Valley polka fans for almost a half century, Walk just learned he will be duly recognized for that upbeat contribution.  The United States Polka Association has announced that it will present the Lifetime Achievement Award, its highest national honor, to Walk at its annual convention in Cleveland Saturday May 28th  Sto Lat Larry and Diana, too!

I guess although I will have to wait to have my picnic spirit satisfied, it will be worth it cause next month Polish Happy Hour heads to the Davis Center at MillCreek Park on Thursday, June 9th 5:30-10 PM . To mark summer solstice, albeit a bit early, we will host Sobotka. Made famous by Shakespeare’s play about mischief and summer love, this night of merrymaking-also known as St. John’s Eve-has its roots in magical pagan rituals. Many cultures continue to celebrate the ancient tradition by burning bonfires, bathing in open waters at sunset, and sing and dance until midnight. Young Polish maidens dressed in white, with wreaths of yellow and white wild flowers upon their heads, would set afloat candled wreaths on the rivers, in hopes that a fitting mate would find the wreath when fishing and fall in love with them.(Come join us to try your luck!) New this year: Live music by the fun, zany, and truly unique Chardon Polka Band. Mark your calendars now for the PHH event people will be talking about all summer!

Cure for Cancer?Could a cure for cancer be discovered yet wrapped in red tape at the Food and Drug Administration? That is the story told in a newly released documentary.  "Cancer is Serious Business" takes the audience through the treacherous, yet victorious, 14-year journey medical doctor and Ph.D biochemist Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and his patients had to endure in order to obtain FDA-approved clinical trials of antineoplastons.  Burzynski says antineoplastons hold the first cures for childhood brainstem glioma which has never before been cured in any scientifically controlled clinical trial. Texas-based Burzynski won the largest, and possibly the most convoluted and intriguing legal battle against the Food and Drug Administration in American history. When Antineoplastons are approved, it will mark the first time in history a single scientist, not a pharmaceutical company, will hold the exclusive patent and distribution rights on a paradigm-shifting medical. Learn more about it here and come to your conclusions.
