Neither spots require standing – just a friendly face and a willingness to talk about our culture and maybe sell a t-shirt or two! Reach out by emailing info@polishyoungstown.org or calling 330-333-9724. ZAPRASZAMY

Simply Slavic starts on Friday...

               with BEER!

Presented with the generous support of Wasko Family Funeral Homes, Simply Slavic has focused this year’s efforts on expansion and customization.  “We have been asked to grow to two days for a number of years, but didn’t feel we had the capacity,” says John Slanina, Committee Chair. “The idea of hosting the season kick off of Party on the Plaza – SLAVIC STYLE allowed us to make this step with moderation.” The festival will open with free admission and limited offerings on Friday night from 7-10 PM.  Local food trucks Babcia’s Lunchbox, Steel City Chimneys, Hornyak Concessions and the Slavic JAMM will be on site accompanied by a wide selection of Slavic beers & spirits. A raucous night is planned led by the fun-loving, modern–style Chardon Polka Band. “We hope this event will give people a taste of what we are about and entice them to come back for the big event on Saturday!”

As extra special feature of the night the group will be the tapping SS’s own custom beer! Made especially for the occasion by Warren-based Modern Methods Brewing Co., the amber lager features imported Czech hops and Czech lager yeast. “We are really excited to be involved with such a creative, energized group,” says Adam Keck, president of Modern Methods. “We tried to create something unique that matched their enthusiasm for their heritage.” Highlighting the fertile plains of Bohemia, the beer will be available after a ceremonial firkin tapping at 7:00 PM on Friday night and throughout the festival.

Join a Bike Ride Under the Polish Moon

Paying tribute to their roots in an ear of changing communities, the folks in Milwaukee have come up with a very interesting idea.  The Polish Moon Ride on Friday, June 22, 2018 is a slow-moving, family-friendly, 8-mile, summer night bike tour through the real “Streets of Old Milwaukee” honors the area’s historic Polish (now Latino)  neighborhood on the city’s South Side. The 5th annual event is a police-led ride that starts with accordion players cranking out polka on the back of cargo bikes along the entire ride. Check out video here. The crowd of people on bikes last year stretched 10 city blocks! When they get back to the start at Fuel Cafe, the Polish Moon Polka Trio kicks off the after-party with their special Milwaukee polka and food and drink. What a great way to spend a summer evening! I could see this in Cleveland’s Slavic Village or Pittsburgh’s Polish Hill…future idea!

Polish vodka museum in Warsaw celebrates national drink

A new museum is opening in Warsaw devoted to Polish vodka, a 500-year-old national tradition and one of the country’s best-known exports. The Polish Vodka Museum is scheduled to open next week in a former 19th century vodka factory that is part of an industrial area undergoing revitalization and gentrification.  Andrzej Szumowski, CEO of the Polish Vodka Association, says he hopes the multimedia exhibition housed in several rooms will bring greater recognition to the national drink. Szumowski described vodka as an essential component of Poland’s heritage and claimed that Poles were the first to produce it — something he acknowledged was a point of dispute with Russia. He called Polish vodka “part of our DNA, part of our history, heritage and tradition.”
